The two most common verticals are the whip 5/8 style and the J - pole antennas, both from different aerial manufacturers we all know...
Compared to a double stack, in my opinion, they are shite.
Double stacks seem to have a better RP, and just generally provide better coverage. The only time i would recomend using a vertical, is if you are puttin your rig in a tree, but remember they need a minimum of 12ft 360 degrees clearance of ANY object to work at their best.
The J - Poles are shit in my opinion. They've never worked well enough for me.
But, if you really want to push it, you can build a double stack out of verticals, which might be better than all of them! Anyone built one of those ?? :D

They are higher gain than a double stack but they have a really strange radiation pattern. They give an 'up and over' broadcast range meaning you may have a weak signal near your block then drive a further 5 miles and then you will hit a good reception patch.
Sometimes they work out well comming from low ground or a low block, but they are really hit and miss. I wouldnt pay veronica or nrg prices either as you are pissing money down the drain when some one comes and nicks it.
A well made double is your best bet.

I thought 5/8th's were harder to trace tho' because of that?
Especially when overloaded.
Is that still true...
