I have seen a few people saying that this station and that station are trying for a long tearm rsl licence.

Some of them haven't got a chance in hell!!

but what station do you think deserves a licence ??

Looking at the big picture i.e. in terms of station quality, length of time on air etc. i'd say Kool, Shine, Vybe, Freeze and Passion off the top of my head.

Sadly though, you have to bear in mind that if ever they were to get a licence the music policy would change completely, which would mean the station just wouldn't be the same.

Shame really, would be good to see a decent legal dance music station on the dial, bit like Kiss in the 90's before they went sh*te.

Sadly though, you have to bear in mind that if ever they were to get a licence the music policy would change completely, which would mean the station just wouldn't be the same. This is true if a station goes commercial, but with Access radio it is non-commercial and the licence fee is lower. Probably slightly cheaper than a year's worth of rigs and aerials anyway :D Big problem is the power limit... All FM Access stations are meant to be aimed at a 3 mile radius (ish) max, and have to be "proper community radio" which in cities means there have to be lots of talk shows about regeneration projects and gun crime, basically.

Can't see any pirate fitting that description except maybe a few of the reggae stations like Unique FM and so on.

If it wasn't for these (stupid) rules about what is and isn't community radio it'd be good to see a coalition of two or three dance stations getting together. I can't see any single station that could do 24/7 really professional on their own, even if some stations like Force, Passion, Rinse are really good on a few nights a week.

Yep - with you guys here...especially S-Dee and the Kiss! issue...******s.

Mind you - as soon as 'Classic FM' got all the 100MHz range up here, I couldn't hear Kiss for the bloody noise and interference and didn't help with Radio One on top of it.

Right with ya there S-Dee.

Unknown are going for a license but it'll be difficult. RSL's are hard enough to get together with the cost, sheer amount of paperwork, let alone full, ILR licenses.

It's possible the Radio Authority might wake up to offer small, localised legal stations but they've not shown much in the past for this - after all, it seems pretty ridiculous to me theres no 24/7/365 legal reggae station for London (Let's face it, Station FM should have been given one years ago!!!!!)... Don managed 4 weeks legal back in late 94 but that was enough sweat and tears, and the hope for any more RSL's or legal broadcasting was short lived. Fantasy were also falsely given legal hopes back in the early 90's too.

i agree that house fm is very pro ......................... but to pro ..... i think the only stn that would keep it real ( ali g quote ) has to be passion 918 ...... i cant see passion becoming a kiss fm if it ever got a license ......but is it a license to play the tunes ? or a license to print money ?

I dont reckon anymore pirates will become legal nowadays. Not with the labour goverment, and the transformation of DTI to OFCOM, yea, some deserve to but it's unlikely. Unless they have enough money... and I'm talkin enough money. Things aint cheap with labour. Also the fact that FM will soon be obsolete, so why would the government waste time on the non-profitable FM frequancies of an all but dying dance culture illegal station, when their focus is on DAB.

Good luck passion, unknown... You are the best contestants, but if I were you, I'd spend money on doing what you are doing, rather than let the government rip you off to going "legal"

FURTHERMORE...

Why would you want to ....?

Its a crime what they ask you to pay. You wanna talk about illegality, or whats wrong or right, then you soon have to realise that what they are charging you for you so called "freedom of speech" ... who are the criminals out there, the cunts that jack you for farting or the the people that actually do something benifical for the country.

If you become legal, bad luck. You have now entered the world of expence.

I think your getting abit ahead of your self m8. Yes we all know about DAB and eventually they will probaly sell off the FM band for other usage but not as soon as u think, the way your talking as if its gona happen tomorrow? Im sure there is still quiet alot of money to be made by the government out of the FM band now & forever. And if pirates do make that jump to legal on the FM band, once they have that licance why cant they apply for a DAB 1? As for FM Non-profitable? I do DISAGRE with u there m8? Theres always a profit as far as Labour government are concerned!!!! ;)

I can't belive Pointblank has'nt had a mention on this post I know they arn't 24/7 (maybe thats why?) but personally i think they are the most profesh sounding station on the dial (what i can pick up anyway).
But in my opinion i think Pirates should stay as they are, if any of them went legal it just would'nt be the same...
